Interview with Billy Hedgepeth,  A.K.A. the bass player for the band RUMORS

85.jpg

How long have you been playing?
Sounds like a trick question . Ha Ha - lets see - - I got my first 6 string when I was 12, and then switched to playing bass at about 17. I'm now 36, so it's been 26 years all together.

What instruments do you play?
Well, if you can call it playing. (LOL) Guitar and Bass. I love to beat on the drums, until my band mates beg me to stop.

What was your first album?
Man! That's a tough one. Let me think. Well, my mom worked in a restaurant when I was young, and they had a juke box. The man that changed out the records would give them to my mom. I would play them on my sister's record player. I remember Fats Domino, and a lot of Motown type stuff, Elvis, and country. But my sister had two albums that I loved. Believe it or not, they were Earth Wind & Fire and Cat Stevens. You know, he's some kind of Guru now, or something. (LOL) But the E.W.F. album was my favorite. If you ever get a chance, check them out. Man! What harmony and bass lines they had.

What was your first concert?
Foghat and Blue Oyster Cult. When I was 10, I didn't know what the Foghat song, "Slow Ride," meant, but I knew I liked it for some strange reason.

Who is your favorite band?
Man! That's a tough one, because I listen to everything, and I mean everything. But, If I had to pick, lets see....Jimi Hendrix, The Beatles, Cream, Metallica, ...hum, hum...Garth Brooks, C.C.R. I think The Beatles would be the one. Oh, Sorry. KISS didn't make it (LOL) No, that's a great band too.

Who is your favorite local band?
RUMORS, of course. (LOL) From what I've heard (I don't get to get out much, you know... wife + kid = not going to see any bands) I like Tater, Sister Trish, 5PR (five point remedy), and Bandana. They all are great at what they are playing.

What band do you dislike the most?
Hmmmm...I can't say that I have ever heard a band or CD that I couldn't find something I liked about it. I would say there is not one...OK! I don't care for any opera. (LOL) Too stiff necked for my taste.

What should a crowd expect from a RUMORS show?
I can't say, because every show is different. We feed off of the crowd, so that dictates what kind of show you will see from RUMORS.

Do you have any pre-show rituals?
Yeah, I tune my bass. (LOL)

Do you have any weird fan stories?
Well, let's just say that the band sees a lot of things that goes on when we are playing. Some good. Some bad. Some funny.

What is your take on the local music scene?
There is a lot of talent in the Cleveland County area. So, if you get a chance, check out one of the local bands. I promise you will not be disappointed.

Is there anything you would like to see change?
I would like to see someone open a club for music, not food, video, or sports. A place to go dance and see a band play.

What is the best venue you played?
The best venues I have played are the ones that really want bands. It's hard to explain. Some places you play, just want a band because everyone else has a band.

What is the worst venue you played?
The worst venue I played was in 1984. There were 2 guitar players (1 was me), a drummer, a singer, and no bass player. We knew about 6 songs. We played a birthday party, or something. It sucked! (LOL)

Is there anything else you would like to say?
On behalf of RUMORS, I would like to thank all our fans and the people that help the band. We never can thank them enough for their help and support. Next time you hear about a local band playing, go check them out. Let them know what you think, good or bad. They like to hear what people have to say. It helps the bands grow and change. Who knows, the local band you see today, could be the stars of tomorrow. So check 'em out...Thanks.
